This poem was written by John Cannard in the 1930s when the first pylons
came to the Western edge of the village of Nailsea
The Marching Pylons
John Cannard
See them coming linked together, across the face of all the land,Latticed giants marching thither, against whom no man makes a stand,
See them in straight line succession, robot army on the march,
Armed unending steel procession, proud, unyielding, stoic and stark.
Through the woodlands, across the river, over mountains, over plain,
Unresisted, on forever, power coursing through their veins,
Power fantastic, deadly power, harnessed power of lightening flash
Pylon upon pyloned tower, stark and impudently brash.
Silent titans in their thousands, steadily making more complete,
Occupation of our homelands, cast prostrate below their feet,
Over hills and over valleys, come these soulless brigand bands,
Seeking other in their sallies to subject all with steely strands.
